Abstract of the talk….

Networked systems have attracted resurgent interest in recent years. Particular attention

has been devoted to wireless sensor network (WSN) and networked multiagent systems.

WSN consists of inexpensive and lowpower communication devices with inbuilt sensors

called sensor nodes which are spatially distributed to cooperatively monitor physical and

environmental conditions. WSN has been identified as a key technological area and new

frontier which holds the potential to dramatically change the way we live. In this talk, we

shall first give a brief introduction to WSN and research issues associated with target

tracking using WSN. We then discuss research topics related to information processing in

WSN such as sensor management (localization, sensor scheduling and sensor energy

management), bandwidth limited estimation and control, estimation and control over

unreliable networks, and cooperative distributed estimation and control for multiagent

systems. A WSN based target tracking platform and a multirobot cooperative control

platform will be demonstrated. Our WSN platform has the functions of sensor node energy

monitoring, competition based sensor scheduling, distributed target estimation, and Labview

based software system for network status monitoring.

About the speaker…

Lihua Xie received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in electrical engineering from Nanjing University

of Science and Technology in 1983 and 1986, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical

engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 1992. Since 1992, he has been

with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University,

Singapore, where he is currently a professor and the Director, Centre for Intelligent

Machines. He is also a Changjiang adjunct professor of South China University of

Technology. He held teaching appointments in the Department of Automatic Control, Nanjing

University of Science and Technology from 1986 to 1989.

Dr Xie’s research interests include robust control and estimation, networked control systems, time

delay systems, control of disk drive systems and sensor networks. In these areas, he has

published many journal papers and co-authored two patents and the books H-infinity Control and Filtering of Twodimensional Systems (with C. Du); Optimal and Robust

Estimation (with F.L. Lewis and D. Popa) and Control and Estimation of Systems with

Input/Output Delays (with H. Zhang). He is an Associate Editor of Automatica and IEEE

Transactions on Control Systems Technology. He served as an Associate Editor of IEEE

Transactions on Automatic Control from 2005 to 2007 and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and

SystemsII from 2006 to 2007. He was the General Chairman of the 9th International

Conference on Control, Automation, Robotics and Vision. Dr Xie is a Fellow of IEEE.
