The School of Mathematical Sciences was founded in 1945 and had several times of adjustments after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It was re-established officially as the Department of Applied Mathematics in 1980 and renamed the Department of Mathematics in 2006. The School of Mathematical Sciences was founded in 2016. Many renowned scholars have taught in our school. Since the 1980s, the School of Mathematical Sciences has brought in numerous famous Chinese mathematicians. And during the 21st century, a group of young and middle-aged leading figures in research including those awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars were also recruited. The School of Mathematical Sciences has made huge progress in discipline development, teaching staff construction, talent cultivation, research and academic exchange, educational research and textbook reform. Besides, the comprehensive strength in teaching and research has been continually enhanced and it has been highly influential among domestic and international educational circles and academia. At the end of 2017, Mathematics discipline of Tongji University was graded A (for top 2%~5%) in the fourth round evaluation of disciplines of universities and colleges in Chinese Mainland according to the results announced by the Ministry of Education.

Discipline Development.There are two undergraduate programs: one is Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and the other is Statistics; From 1984 till now, the School of Mathematical Sciences has opened master programs in all second disciplines in mathematics, and doctoral programs in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and all first-level disciplines in Mathematics. The School of Mathematical Sciences has also established a Post-doctoral Research Center. In particular, the research team working on Financial Mathematics has standed out from the peers and focused on frontier topics in international financial research, winning a place in the academia at home and abroad. In 2007, Pure Mathematics was assessed as the State Key Discipline (Cultivation). In 2017, Mathematics of Tongji University was graded A (for top 2%~5%) in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation.

Teaching and Research.The School of Mathematical Sciences has 96 faculty members, among which 10 people are in the national-level Talent Programs and 3 have won the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.The School of Mathematical Sciences has been laying great emphasis on both research and teaching. In February 2005, the School of Mathematical Sciences was granted as one of the seven national teaching bases for Engineering Mathematics by the Ministry of Education, and the School of Mathematical Sciences also participated actively in the establishment of Innovation Development Pilot Area sponsored by the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, many achievements were made. The School of Mathematical Sciences was awarded with the National and Shanghai Standards of Quality Courses and National and Shanghai Teaching Awards. The two courses, Higher Mathematics and Financial Mathematics, were included in the High-Quality Sharing Courses by the Ministry of Education. Many textbooks such as Higher Mathematicsgranted as national excellent teaching materials and superior teaching material of Ministry of Education have a wide circulation and a high reputation in the nation. 

The School of Mathematical Sciences has been laying great emphasis on both research and teaching.

Student Cultivation.The School of Mathematical Sciences concentrates on cultivating students’ ability to integrate theory and practice, and to research and innovate. Our students were honored with the Nomination Award for the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in 2011, and the first prize in College Students’ Innovation Projects in 2009. In recent years, a number of students have been granted Shanghai Municipal Excellent Doctoral Dissertation per year and some students have won the first or the second prize in the Chinese Mathematics Competitions, China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) for several times.  

International Exchange and Cooperation.The School of Mathematical Sciences has signed dual degree agreements for graduate students with several famous universities in Europe and the United States, and many of our graduate and undergraduate students go abroad to visit universities and research centers for academic exchanges. Besides, the School of Mathematical Sciences has also held domestic and international meetings, invited internationally renowned mathematicians to our school and organized international summer schools for graduate and undergraduate students.
