On December 3, Yuan Yaxiang, Academician of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited our university. Chen Jie, President of Tongji University, and Xu Jianping, deputy Party secretary, met Yuan Yaxiang cordially. President Chen extended a warm welcome to Academician Yuan for his visit to Tongji, thanked him for his support to Tongji University and mathematics discipline over the years, and emphasized the important position of mathematics in natural science and the basic position of "Strong Science" in the discipline construction of the school. Academician Yuan Yaxiang thanked Tongji for its warm invitation and was very happy to come to Tongji for academic exchanges. Tongji mathematics has developed rapidly in recent years, thanks to the attention and concern of the school. Mathematics is the foundation of natural science and also a relatively special discipline, which requires a more relaxed research environment and sustained scientific input. Tongji has already had a certain foundation, and it is believed that the future of Tongji mathematics will be better and better.
On the evening of December 3, the 51st session of Tongji Advanced Lecture hosted by the Academy of Mathematical Sciences and led by Academician Yuan Yaxiang opened in the lecture hall on the first floor of Yifu Building. The lecture hall was presided over by Xu Jianping, Deputy Secretary of the University Party Committee, and attended by Xu Xuejun, Dean of the College of Mathematical Sciences, Li Jingru, Secretary of the College Party Committee and more than 200 teachers and students. Yuan Yaxiang gave a wonderful report on "How to be a good postgraduate student". Starting from the three questions of "why should I be a good postgraduate student", "the difference between a postgraduate student and an undergraduate student" and "what a postgraduate student should do", and combining his academic career and years of postgraduate training experience, he explained the main contradictions and practical difficulties that postgraduate students have to face and overcome in simple terms. In more than an hour of lectures, Yuan Yaxiang learned from many sources and explained the importance of thinking, interest and effort, through introducing typical cases of famous teachers; He also discussed with those present about how to improve one’s scientific research ability, emphasized that spare time life and physical health are also the top priorities in postgraduate life, and gave good wishes to the postgraduate life of the students present. The atmosphere in the lecture hall was warm, with bursts of applause from time to time. The representatives of the postgraduate students present said that listening to the master's words would definitely benefit them for life. Xu Jianping presented the certificate of Tongji Higher Lecture to Yuan Yaxiang, and the lecture ended with warm applause.
In the afternoon of December 4, the symposium between Academician Yuan Yaxiang and the faculty and students of the Academy opened warmly in Zhiyuan Building. Dean Xu Xuejun introduced the basic situation of the College of Mathematical Sciences, pointing out that the College has made great progress in introducing and educating high-level talents in recent years, and has made great progress in discipline construction. At the same time, based on the profound engineering background of Tongji, there are plans for the differential development of Tongji's mathematics. Yuan Yaxiang affirmed the development achievements of Tongji's mathematics, and hoped that young researchers would not have too much pressure and would be free to do some research, especially in basic mathematics; At the same time, he hoped that the school can create a better research environment so that basic mathematicians can boldly do what they want to do. In addition, he believed that the mathematics center should focus on building a platform and strengthen the cross research of mathematics and other related disciplines. Academician Yuan Yaxiang has been engaged in research in computational mathematics, applied mathematics, operational research and other fields for a long time. He is currently a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, vice chairman of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, chairman of the International Federation of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, academician of the Academy of Sciences of developing countries, communication academician of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, member of the first session of the American Mathematical Society, and member of the American Association of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He has made outstanding contributions to nonlinear optimization calculation methods, trust region method, quasi Newton method, conjugate gradient method and other fields.
